ImageCyberathleteAmateurLeague 6v6, Season 2, Quarter Finals:

Alrighty fraggers, ET.TV is back this week with the first round of CAL playoffs. In comparison to the TGL playoffs that just finished we are going to be seeing a much different make-up for the playoffs with only three teams from the TGL playoffs competing in the CAL championship. The level of skill has proven to be much higher in CAL this season as can be seen by the placing of hubris, undefeated in TGL, but only managing a third place showing in CAL with a 5-3 record. Similarly FATE, TGL's second place team only managed a sixth place showing in regular season play ending up 4-4.

The major reason for this being the make-up of the league which has the undefeated EuroMix team, the Decimated squad; a team comprised of veteran FPS pro-players, and The United Force (formerly mL) who are the defending season one champs. Because so many great teams are in the CAL playoffs it is very exciting to both players and spectators alike as we should all be getting ready for what will no doubt be some of the best Quake Wars action to date.

The first round map is Salvage. An infantry only map in the open league playoffs once again. A fine map for regular season but when it comes down to it so many better choices exist that really show off ET:QW in all it's greatness it can only leave one wondering how the map selection was made when great maps like Island or Area22 don't seem to have made a playoff appearance. In case you have forgotten Salvage was the final map of the season for CAL and here it is again being played back to back as our first map of the playoffs. Maybe the existence Area22 and Island, having been played in succession weeks one and two, were simply forgotten by the CAL admins. Whatever the reason we begin our 6v6 open playoff journey on an infantry only map. Here are the match-ups:

(1) TheEuroMix -- BYE
The EuroMix squad will have a BYE round one with their match originally being scheduled against theXclamation having been canceled due to recent problems within theXclamation camp. I wish theXclamation guys GL for next season.

(2) Decimated vs. (7) Silent Service
Our first match-up pits Decimated against the Silent Service team. Both teams are bound for QuakeCon and this match looks to be a preview of what we could see there. Both teams are known for having good infantry work but Silent Service has had some problems as of late and hopefully they will have everything sorted out come Thursday. These two teams did not face each other in the regular season so this is the first time they have faced off in an official match. SS clearly the underdog will have to show us some of the great teamwork we saw during the infantry only 5v5 season if they expect to pickup a win and move on in the playoffs. It does well to remember that SS did beat out the then undefeated ESM team during the 5v5 playoffs last season in TGL so being the underdog is not something they are unfamiliar with nor is upsetting higher ranked teams.

(3) hubris vs. (6) FATE
The grudge match continues. In what is sure to be an exciting match hubris looks to continue their winning streak against FATE this Thursday. Having won the last three encounters, including one on ark 4-2 during the CAL regular season, hubris will no doubt be feeling confident coming into this match. FATE on the other hand having been on the wrong end of three very closes matches with hubris will no doubt be looking to finally put the puzzle together and advance in the playoffs. If they do they will be one round closer to the 6v6 championship that has so far eluded them having played for two titles but not having been able to pick one up as yet.

(4) Hells Katz Squad vs. (5) The United Force
Another great match-up between two of the original North American ET:QW teams. In their last match TUF was able to handle HK without little problem on Sewers having picked up a 4-0 victory. The road has been rocky so far for the last season champs, TUF, during the CAL season but they seemed to have picked up steam coming into the last half of the season having won their last four matches heading into the playoffs. Likewise the Hells Katz have had an up and down season as well having had roster problems. Both teams look to be ready for Thursday and this match really should come down to which team is better prepared, more practiced and ready to go. Having played each other numerous times on Salvage in the past this match looks to be a great one.
